Source was a 25 year old ethnic Chinese male born in Haiphong, Northern Vietnam, and who migrated with six family members to China by train via Hekou, Yunnan Province, in April 1978. He estimated that about 1,000 migrants were on the train.
He was sent with his wife and child to Dawang Overseas Chinese Farm, Sihui County, Guangdong Province where, in early 1981 he heard that two boats with Vietnamese Chinese passengers had escaped from Jingkou (6635/0656), Sanshui County (an the Beijiang) to Macau (no further details). They had sent letters back to relatives on Dawang Farm. This prompted Source to organise his own departure group comprising himself, wife, child, and members of two other Vietnamese Chinese families at Dawang, 16 persons in all, to go to Macau.
