Vietnamese Refugees Ex-China - L/M 1252
On 18th March 1981 a wooden rowing boat sized 10 by 2 metres, of the type used in the Chinese river cargo trade, and bearing no registration markings, entered Hong Kong with 37 ethnic Chinese passengers aboard (L/M 1252).
2.
The passengers initially claimed to have come from Haiphong but admitted after questioning that the boat had in fact departed on 11th March 1981 from Mafeng (7456/2075), Sanshui (0005/3055) County, Guangdong Province, travelled down the Bei Jiang (North River),(0554/3008) via Jiangmen (3068/7024) and Modaumen (4333/0430/7024), entering Macau on 14th March 1981. On 18th March they left Macau and reached Hong Kong later the same day.
3.
They insisted that many of their number had never been resettled on Overseas Chinese Farms in China, but had formed part of a group which left Haiphong on 12th August 1979. Two of the L/M 1252 group were "double backers" who had entered Hong Kong in September 1979 and been repatriated to China in October 1980 (L/M 900 and L/M 902).
4.
Further enquiries established that most (29 of 37) of the group had in fact come from Dawang Overseas Chinese Farm, Sihui (0934/2585) County, Guangdong Province; the rest were from other Overseas Chinese Farms as follows:
(a) Guangdong Province
Dawang Jingkou

(b) Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
