The

a further 50 quarters (1986 programme) were listed. shortfall has now been revised to 160 quarters. The Uni- versity now proposes to increase the 1983 programme from 100 to 120 quarters to take advantage of economy and efficiency in developing the Victoria Road site, and to reduce the 1986 programme from 50 to 40 quarters. The Committee supports these proposals. The University has in fact brought forward the construction of 16 quarters from the 1983 programme so that they can be integrated with the development of Phase II housing (104 flats) for practical

reasons.

8.

The estimate of $120.047 million for the 120 flats under the 1983 programme is based on the development of Phases I and II on the same at Victoria Road and excludes

site

fees and furniture. No breakdown of the estimate by area development, site development and building value is avai- lable until a quantity surveyor has been appointed.

Estate Workshop Building exten- sion and remedial works to slopes at an estimated cost of $1.632 million and $2 million respectively were also approved in the 1981-82 programme for the University of Hong Kong.

The Estate Workshop Building extension will provide 300 m2 2

administrative accommodation but the University miscalculated the construction cost by using the net instead of the gross area in the estimates. To rectify this, the Committee supports revising the estimate from $1.632 m to $2.082 m at mid 1980

· prices.

10.

Since the submission in 1980, the estimated cost of rectifying those defective slopes and retaining structures identified in 1980 has become clearer. In addition, certain other slopes also require investigation. The commitment for remedial works to slopes therefore needs to be increased from $2 million to $4.24 million at mid 1981 prices.
