Despite of the advice of the P.W.D. Geotechnical Control Office against developing sites for Buildings 1 and 2, the University prefers Phase II to comprise two buildings consisting of a reduced Building 1 two-thirds the size (height) recommended by the consultants, and Building 2 which should be a low-rise structure compatible with Phase lb buildings, the two buildings together to provide 10,000 m2

net.

The revised scheme preferred by the University would cost $104.506 million which is more expensive than any of the options recommended by the Consultants; Building 1 being $92.436 million, Building 2 $88.018 million and Building 3 $85.290 million. The estimates take into account the cost of constructing a north-south pedestrian link, reprovisioning of existing facilities, professional fees, furniture and equip- ment, and slope stabilisation work which has to be carried out to sites earmarked for Buildings 1 and 2 regardless of the sites to be developed. The Committee recommends Building 3 which is the cheapest, although aesthetically it may be the least acceptable and it is relatively farthest away from the core activities area.

Further information on slope stability near the favoured sites would not be available until towards the end of the year. The University will be asked to carry out a site investigation for Building 3 in the light of additional data from the Geotechnical Control Office.

On senior staff housing, the University of Hong Kong identified a shortfall of 180 quarters by 1986-87 at 4% growth. In the event, 100 quarters (1983 programme) were approved and
