Capital Recommendations 1982-83

This is the Committee's second annual submission of capital recommendations to Government following the revision of capital planning and procedures last year. The proposals in this paper do not take into account requirements arising from implementation of the report of the Review Committee on Post- Secondary and Technical Education.

Review of the 1981-82 Recommendations

The Committee met in September 1980 to consider building proposals from the two Universities and the Polytechnic. Recommen- dations were made to Government in November 1980 and allocations notified to institutions in March 1981.

Major building programmes approved for the University of Hong Kong are Phase II academic/administrative accomodation and additional senior staff quarters. Phase II will provide net accommodation of 10,000 m2 which will enable the University to expand to a student population of 7,200 by 1987-88 at 4% annual growth. Funds were provided in 1981-82 for a feasibility study of sites within the main campus. The consultants appointed to undertake the feasibility study have recommended in their report three options

15 storeys, at the east end of the University, top of a valley sandwiched between the Knowles Building and the University Path Residences.

13 storeys, on the area occupied by the University Path Residences and below Old Halls.
