Members feel that faculty staff are rather isolated and that much more encouragement is required by the College for staff development in all of its forms. Otherwise, there is a danger of stagnation.

The Head of Biology is felt to have the potential to weld the staff into a competent team.

CHEMISTRY

Introduction

The task of making a direct comparison between chemistry based courses at the Hong Kong Polytechnic (HKP) and the Hong Kong Baptist College (HKBC) proved extremely difficult. Two reasons contributed to this difficulty viz.

(i) The Higher Diploma in Applied Science at HKP

contained a minimal chemistry element and the only possible comparator course, the Higher Diploma in Chemical Technology, was not yet in operation. Moreover, the highest level chemistry teaching currently is at the diploma. level.

(ii)

The aims and objectives of courses at HKP and HKBC were markedly different. In general terms the aims and objectives of the HD courses at HKP are vocationally and technologically oriented whereas those at HKBC are designed to provide a broad educational experience of the kind

associated with a liberal arts college in the United States.

The following report therefore focusses its attention on a statement of the situation which the members perceived at HKP and HKBC. It concentrates its conclusions on the potential at HKBC both to fulfil the aims and objectives of the Senior and Honours Diploma Programmes and on the potential to reach more advanced standards.
