rigorous selection of modern texts relevant to the programme is needed. Journal provision for a 2 year diploma is adequate; however it is inadequate to meet the needs of staff if they were to be engaged in professional activities. Library and other support services are not able to extend the educational experience of the students to the same extent as are those of the Polytechnic.
Staff Quality
HKP Factual
The group is a recently formed, growing, section of the science department. Half of the staff have PhD's. There is no strong record of published work.
Staff may have enhancement by abtaining sabbatical periods away from Hong Kong.
HKBC Factual
Four staff have PhD's and a fifth an MSc, and most have worked overseas and met other academics. Money for faculty to attend conferences and for research is non-existent, although they do have some contact with the two universities.
The experience of staff is limited to the academic world.
There is a record of published work.
The Head of Biology is comparatively inexperienced in academic leadership.
HKBC Comment
On average, the staff are better qualified than those at the Polytechnic. They have an equally heavy teaching load. The potential of the staff is inhibited by the inadequate resource provision, together with their heavy, teaching commitment.
There is no industrial experience amongst the faculty, but the programme is not of an applied nature.
They have published more work in learned journals than the Polytechnic staff.
The potential of these staff extends well beyond the 2 year senior diploma and they are felt to be directly comparable in quality to their counterparts in the Polytechnic.
