studies and also that their domestic circumstances made it essential for them to use the college library in order to study. This reinforced members perception of the need for additional expenditure on library accommodation and book and periodical holdings.

The students were seen to be highly motivated to their studies and they stressed to members their view that the courses at Baptist College provided them with an educational experience which was much more than narrowly professional. Particularly those students whom they met from the Economics and Secretarial Management Departments revealed the stimulation and desire to study which they had received from the lively and competent teaching of the staff.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

(a)

(b)

Members of the CNAA visiting party fully recognised that those courses at which they had looked at the Polytechnic as comparators for the courses at Baptist College were not in any sense identical to the Baptist Diploma and Honours Diploma courses. Nevertheless, they confirm that they were able to evaluate the level given the documentation which was presented to them, the staff with whom they had extensive discussion and the knowledge which they gained of the student intake. They would particularly like to thank the 4 departments, both staff and students with whom they had discussions, for providing responses to the questions raised in the initial CNAA report asking for additional material about teaching methods, details of syllabuses, admission and selection of students, aims and objectives of courses, etc. Material was provided which was very helpful to Members and which was full and frank.

The general conclusion which Members came to was that in the Departments of Secretarial Management and Economics, although there are particular comments that they have made on the Diploma courses offered they have no doubt that the courses are comparable in level to courses offered at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. The level which is attained at the end of the programmes is comparable to that of the courses which Members saw at the Polytechnic. In many ways the courses are different in focus. Whilst the first 2 years of the Senior Diploma have the same vocational and professional aims as those of the Polytechnic, the Honours year does attempt to make students readily acceptable for programmes
