Approximately 25% of the students have an Advanced Level in Mathematics and over 60% of the student entrants have done Principles of Economics in secondary school.
In discussing the syllabuses with the teaching staff, Members continued to feel that they might be making too great a demand on students. Nevertheless, they were happy with the structure of the Diploma and the Honours Diploma as presented and recognised that the Economics Team was a team of young professional economists with considerable potential. The Senior Diploma course is cohesive although perhaps lacking in Managerial Economics in the Second Year. The International Economics, Comparative Economics and Development Economics courses can all be commended.
Members felt that the economists from this Department should in fact be contributing to all Economics courses in the Faculty and that this would strengthen both the courses and staff of the Economics Department itself. This structural change is referred to later in the Conclusion to this Report.

Members visited the library and found that the book stock was barely adequate for the Diploma courses which were being developed. Nevertheless they felt that very wise purchasing had occurred. There is a shortage of journals and it is suggested that considerably more money needs to be allocated to the provision of academic and professional journals. Members received documents which indicated that the allocation of funds to the various departments in the College was identical whatever the nature of the subject. This they found particularly strange given the fact that subjects such as Accounting, Economics, Business Management require a heavy input of reading. They would suggest that the College look again at its library fund and see whether some weighting could be given to the library-based disciplines rather than leave re-allocation to chance under- or over-spending by particular departments. It was learned that the inter-library loan system is available only to staff and this seems a most undesirable situation if students are to have access to the widest range of material.
