of further study in universities and also has the academic aim of broadening the students' education. Members felt that where, as for example in Secretarial Studies, there is a difference in the nature of the programmes offered, that difference is compensated by the increased breadth of the course in the Honours year.
Members were not able to accept the Diploma courses in Accounting and Business Management as being of comparable standard to those in the Polytechnic. This was very largely because they were over-ambitious given the lack of staff in these
areas.
They
(A) Members felt that it was inappropriate to try to offer 4 concentrations in the Business Management Diploma when the staff base was so thin in terms of quality and quantity. further discovered that in fact the major proportion of the courses listed in the submission could not be offered at the moment because there are not the staff in post. probable that if the staff were available a viable course could be developed but Members did not see such a course at the present time.
It is
(B) In Accounting, too, the major constraint was
the quality and number particularly of
available full-time staff and the standard achieved was not comparable with that in the Polytechnic.
The major difficulty which Members saw as facing this particular Faculty was the lack of staff in many areas and the very high staff turnover. In the papers presented to Members during the visit staff made it quite clear that they understood the nature of their own requirements and the additional staffing that was essential for the further development of their Honours Diploma year. It is essential that there should be additional staff, particularly in the functional areas if the programme is to be sustained as presented although it is recognised that getting full-time staff in professionally related areas even if the salary position were to be improved might present considerable difficulties.
Even if additional staff were appointed in the Business Management area Members feel that the range of Concentrations proposed is too great and would suggest that the programme should be rationalised and that students would not suffer in
