50th Guangzhou Trade "Rair
The 50th Session of the Guangzhou Trade Fair opened on 15 October for one month. According to press reports, the
autumn fair is continuing the attempt to curb competition
amongst provinvial trading corporations by adopting a fixed- pricing system. The system was first adopted at this year's
spring fair. Although firms from Guangdong, Fujian, Shanghai,
Tianjin and Peking are allowed to sign contracts with foreign
buyers, the contracts should follow the fixed pricing-scales
laid down by the appropriate national corporations.

It is difficult to say whether the twice-yearly fairs
are becoming more or less important. Recent visitors have reported that the fair remains a forum for established foreign
buyers but that participation by British, American and Japanese
businessmen has declined. Overseas Chinese attendance seems to
have increased. On the other hand, Chinese trade officials
maintain that the fairs will grow in significance and importance.
One fair organiser claimed that the value of export contracts
concluded at this year's spring and autumn fairs accounted for
one third of China's annual exports.
Development of Guizhou coalfields

At the end of September, Mr. Zhou Jiannan, Deputy
Chairman of the State Council's Import and Export Administrative
Commission visited Hong Kong to discuss with Hong Kong business-
men the joint development of the Liupanshui coalfield in Guizhou
Province. Hong Kong investment in coal-mining equipment, trans-
portation and the development of port facilities at Zhanjiang
would enable the export to Hong Kong of some 1,5-2 million tons
of coal per annum as early as 1984. Investment could take the form of direct loans or forms of compensation trade and the whole
project would be developed in stages. The preliminary plan is to raise the transport capacity of the existing railway line from
