projects and HK$500 million investment in the Special Industrial Zone at Shekou, reported by NCNA on 10 November.

Foreign Investment in Zhuhai SEZ

By the end of 1980, Zhuhai had 70 projects involving

foreign and Hong Kong and Macau investments, with foreign capital amounting to approximately HK$400 million, said Zhou Jiannan in

an article in China's Foreign Trade.

Foreign trade and processing agreements with Shantou SEZ

According to NCNA on 19 November, more than 1,248 contracts

had been signed between Shantou and Hong Kong and foreign companies since 1979. Approximately HK$56.3 million profits had been earned through these agreements in the first nine months of 1981 (double

that for the same period last year).

Hong Kong-Shekou hoverferry service

Delayed from its scheduled inauguration on 11 September, the Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry Company's regular service to Shekou opened on 20 November (see Monthly Notes: August paragraph

11). It is believed that the service was delayed pending the provision of adequate immigration and customs facilities at Shekou.

Warnings to unlicensed offices in Guangdong

On 6 November, local press reports gave prominence to a provincial clamp-down on unregistered overseas commercial

offices in Guangdong. According to China News Service, the provincial authorities were considering action against 40 over- seas companies (including the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank) for failing to register their representative offices in Guangdong.
