China News Service said that 30 foreign commercial organisations in Guangdong had completed registration in accordance with the rules published on 11 May (see Monthly Notes: May paragraph 4). Seventeen of these companies were based in either Hong Kong or Macau. A further eighteen companies had currently applied for registration.

Peninsula Group to manage hotel in Peking

The Peninsula Group's Executive Vice-President,

Mr. Peter Gautschi, told the press on 6 November that his company had obtained a management service contract for the Jianguo Hotel in Peking (a joint venture between Zhong Mei Hotel Development (HK) Ltd. and the Peking branch of China International Travel Service). Construction of the hotel is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and open to guests early next

year.

New Zealand and Hong Kong consortium to build hotels in China

A New Zealand-based company Williams Development Holdings, in which Hong Kong's Carrian Group has a 50% share, has announced plans to invest nearly HK$600 million in various hotel projects in China over the next three years. Preliminary agreement has been reached with the Chinese authorities for the construction of the 300-room Lian Hua Hotel in Xiamen and the 150-room Lung Shan Hotel in Guilin with a combined investment of HK$125 million. Plans for a further five hotels in China (including Guangzhou and

Hainan) are in the pipeline.
