An American oil company, after analysis of satellite
photography, believes there may be a large cil field below the Shekou Peninsula, which is in part bounded by Hong Kong's western territorial waters. A proposal has been put to the CMSN for a feasibility study of oil exploration in the area. The CMSN are interested and are considering the proposal.

The Guangdong Enterprises Company, the official Guangdong provincial trading organisation in Hong Kong, is advertising a new container shipping service from the Far East to be run by a subsidiary, the Yuet Sun Shipping and Cargo Transportation Co., with its registered office in Kowloon. The Fujian Enterprises Co., Fujian Province's trading company in Hong Kong, has been appointed as agent for two cargo vessels which are to provide a service between Japan, China and Hong Kong.

The openly communist controlled Federation of Educational Workers which has a membership of some 2,000, mainly communist teachers etc., has, in response to a general invitation from the Government to all interested organisations, asked to express its views to an international body visiting Hong Kong to make an overall review of the educational system. The Federation has indicated that it proposes to raise reform of the system; the neglect of moral education; and the position of teachers.

Organs of the local communist press have been increasingly calling upon Taiwan to respond to overtures by Chinese leaders to negotiate over reunification. The neutral Ming Pao's monthly publication carried a report of an interview with DENG Xiaoping, in which the latter offered Taiwan the possibility of joint leadership. The follows the visit of the publisher, Louis CHA, to Beijing in July (para 16, July 1981 Report).
