A senior Guangdong official is reported to have been arrested for passing secret information to an unnamed Hong Kong periodical. The latter is likely to have been the magazine "Cheng Ming" or its daily publication both leftwing, but critical of Chinese leadership. The daily was forced to close in July (para 17, July 1981 Report).

Wen Wei Pao, one of the leading communist newspapers, is considering publishing a Chinese-language European publication. It has had a comparable edition selling in California for some months.

The managers of two local communist film companies, together with the controller of local communist film circles, have gone to the USA to survey possible markets for their productions. In a similar venture, the local film circles are considering the establishment of a video cassette company to sell some of their old productions in North America.

Plans for the complete reorganisation and amalgamation of the three communist film companies which were submitted to LIAO Chenzhi, the Director of the Hong Kong and Macau office in Beijing, over a year ago, have at last been approved. Under these plans, the present staff will be gradually discharged, the three companies wound up and a single company subsequently formed, re-employing selected staff.

Celebrations

Chinese communist organisations in Hong Kong celebrated the 32nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic with a series of activities over the period 25 September 5 October. In general the celebrations were on a lesser scale than last year, economy and simplicity having been enjoined, though these were not features of the major National Day reception attended by the Governor.
