Thank you for sending me a full translation of Ai
Qing's poem and a copy of your speech to the Foreign Correspondents' Club, enclosed with your letters of 5
and 15 May.
The first part of the poem is perhaps not so complementary about Hong Kong as the final verse you sent with your letter of 16 April. Nonetheless, as you pointed out in your speech, it is very interesting that the People's Daily should have published it and at the time they did.
I was very interested to read the text of your
speech. I am sure the message you were conveying is the right one and your putting it across so succinctly will, I am sure, have had a most beneficial effect.
