MR BLAKER'S PROPOSED VISIT TO THE FAR EAST
1. We should now like to begin to firm up dates (McLaren's letter of 29 January to Cortazzi and replies). The 'window' for the tour is roughly 14 September to 8 or 9 October, though we do not anticipate filling the whole of that period in the Far East. 9 October is the
very latest Mr Blaker would wish to return since the Conservative Party Conference begins on 12 October in his constituency.
2. There is no particular preference here for the order in which the visits might take place but we have in mind that 1 October is Chinese National Day and that Sir M Maclehose will be much preoccupied with preparations for his LegCo speech up to 7 October. We also need to avoid a clash with Sir K Joseph's plans to visit Japan and Hong Kong (my telato Tokyo no 170, Tokyo telno 197, both not to all). The attendance of Japanese and Chinese Ministers at UNGA may also be a factor.
