- The alternatives seem to be, roughly:
14-17 September Hong Kong
18-25 September China
26 September-2 October Japan
(b) 14-21 September Japan
(c)
22-29 September China
30 September-2 October Hong Kong
20-27 September Japan
28 September-6 October China
7-9 October Hong Kong

4.
30 September-6 October Japan
7-9 October Hong Kong
Subject to the views of Sir M Maclehose neither (e) nor (d) look attractive since the Hong Kong visit would be pretty tightly'squeezed, given the LegCo speech on 7 October and the need to return to London at the very latest pm 9 October.

There is an additional attraction to alternatives
(a) or (b) (though the former might involve a clash
in Japan with Sir K Joseph). Since Korea is no longer to be included (following his visit for the Presidential Inauguration) Mr Blaker is considering adding brief visit(s) to one, or conceivably two,
South East Asian post(s). This would make more sense at the end of the tour, enabling him to give host governments his impressions of Chinese and Japanese policies towards the area.
6. Grateful for your views. When the outline
itinerary is clearer we shall welcome detailed proposals
for programmes.
