NATIONALITY LAW REVIEW: BRITISH OVERSEAS CITIZENSHIP

1.

Mr Smedley's minutes of 29 March and 11 April refer. Following Mr McLaren's return from Hong Kong and the election we have been awaiting word from the Home Office before calling a meeting to discuss an FCO view on the proposed British Overseas Citizenship. The Home Office have now told us that they have been instructed by their new Minister of State to proceed with their consideration of a new nationality law on the basis of the 1977 Green Paper. It now therefore becomes a matter of some urgency for us to formulate a concerted FCO view.

2. It is proposed to hold a meeting in Mr Smedley's office (Room 557, Clive House) at 3 pm on Wednesday 23 May, to which I hope that you will be able to send a representative. I shall be grateful if Mr Paterson (213-6210) could be informed in due course who the representative from your Department will be.
