After appropriate return courtesies, Lord Carrington
said that he fully reciprocated Mr Sonoda's views on the
importance of bilateral collaboration between Britain and
Japan. He would certainly like to go back to Tokyo for
consultations when he could manage this, once the Summit was
out of the way.
Mr Sonoda should not think that Britain
-did not have warm feelings towards Japan, nor did he think
that unhappy historical memories were really relevant now.

After welcoming this opportunity for an early if brief
exchange with Mr Sonoda, Lord Carrington said that he agreed
the dangers of allowing the situation in the Middle
East to deteriorate in a way which could damage the world
economy and upset the peace. He was concerned about the
attitude Israel had adopted since, the Camp David Summit.
