connection between Asian and European affairs; this in turn
underlined the value of increased cooperation and exchanges
of view between the countries of Western Europe and Asia.

British influence was still felt
in Asia and Asian countries wanted to see the UK playing a
more active role. Japan hoped that we would respond by
demonstrating more concern for Asia.
In return Japan hoped
to show a greater degree of interest in Africa. Japan was
ready to extend her cooperation with Africa in ways which would
also suit British interests; this indeed was one of Mr Sonoda'
reasons for planning his visit to Africa in July.

So far as Asian affairs were concerned, he particularly
wanted to underline the importance to Japan of the relationship
between the Soviet Union and China. It should be helpful for
the rest of Asia for the Chinese economy to become more fully
integrated with those of Western Europe, Japan and the United
States
The corollary was that the latter should not have
any conflicts amongst themselves over the development of the
Chinese economy. They should seek to cooperate in deciding
their development assistance, for example in fields such as
communications, transportation and electrification.

On the Middle East, Mr Sonoda said that this was a
very important area both for Japan and Britain. Serious
errors made now would simply mean a redrawing of the world
map as we knew it.
The way
the US had handled its relations
with the area in the past had not been altogether satisfactory.
It was of course difficult to bring exchanges designed to Lead
a comprehensive settlement fully into the open, but all the
countries with interests in the area had some role to play.
