Mr Ted Rowlands MP has now told Mr McLaren that he will be out of the country at the end of September and thus unable to attend the seminar at Brighton from 24 to 26 September. To fill the slot for a Labour politician, I suggest that we might as a first preference send an invitation to Lord Pitt. If he is unavailable, suitable alternative choices might be Mrs Betty Boothroyd MP, Mrs Judith Hart MP or Lord Shackleton.

2. We have also agreed that we should try to include a Conservative backbencher. As a first choice, I suggest we might try Mr Christopher Brocklebank-Fowler, who takes a part- icular interest in Caribbean affairs. As alternatives, I suggest Mr Anthony Nelson MP, Lord Crawford or Mr Anthony Kershaw MP.

3. I should be grateful to know if Mr Ridley has any objection to our sending invitations to any of these suggested participants.

I think Miss Betty Boothroyd would be fine. I have doubts about Dame Judith and, to a lesser extent, about Lord Shackleton. As well as Mr Brocklebank-Fowler, Mr Nelson has shown a keen interest in Caribbean affairs.
