1. Many thanks for your letter of 5 January and for your con- gratulations. I am of course ready to help in any way I can to see the Elections here through and to get a new number two into the saddle before I go..

2. But on receipt of your letter I wrote to the Pensions, people to find out if there are any advantages or disadvantages, taxiso or from the point of view of the annual inflation proofing exur- cise, to retiring on any particular date. When I receive their reply I will let you have my final suggestion on a retiring date. Meanwhile, I don't want to hold things up for you so it may holn if I put my thoughts on paper now in order that you can get on with planning.
3.
Leaving at the beginning of December would suit me fine, but there is a point which you may wish to take into consideration. The present Belize Government's term of office comes to an en! on 31 October 1979 and, under the Constitution, an Election was then to be held within three months of that date. Normally the Election and resultant formalities can be completed within a couple of months. But if there were delays, we would be hard pressed to complete the Election and the appointment of senators, linisters, etc, by the beginning of December. It might be more sensible therefore for me to retire formally on 31 December. However, if Price delayed the Election until January 1980, which he is quite entitled to do, you can depend on me to extend my tour to cover the short additional period.
4. With this as the background and subject to what the Tensions neople say, 31 December seems to be a reasonable compromise for my retirement date.
