I
am delighted that you are thinking of moving Brian berry the middle of the year. He has done a first rate job here, Tas given his best to it, but by then will be ready for a change. Lay I suggest, therefore, that he leaves early in July, after our forthcoming Inspection, which is due from about 21-28 June. I suggest you plan on this basis. His successor will need about ten days to take over.
6. As regards my leave, there are difficulties. If you agree to Berry going early in July, I wouldn't wish to be away myself during the time that a new man was working himself in. It might be possible for me to slip away for a month in hay. This would be about half way through my extended tour. When we have gone firm on a final retiring date, I will take this up with my Department. Meanwhile, I am sending John Shakesncare a copy of this letter to keep him in the picture.
7. There is one last point which you and John Shakespeare may like to be aware of at this stage. Colonel Robertson, the CDFD, is due to complete his tour here at the end of December also. In casual conversation with him the other day, he told me that he was enjoying the job very much and wouldn't mind extending if he was asked to do so. It might therefore be helpful to my successor if Colonel Robertson was to extend by about three months so as to stagger departure and arrival dates of the two principal British Officers in belize.
Yours ever
cc: J WR Shakespeare Esq VO
