(b)

Typists are required to have,

(i) (ii)

completed Form IV or equivalent; and,

a typing speed of 30 w.p.m., which must be increased to 40 w.p.m. before passage over the probation bar;

whilst, Senior Typists (a promotion rank for Typists) are required to have,

(iii) supervisory ability.

Typists,

(a)

undertake general typing duties either in pools or sections;

answer telephone messages; and,

(iii) assist in smaller offices with simple

clerical duties;

whilst, Senior Typists,

(iv) supervise and organise the work of

between 5 and 15 Typists in a typing pool, train new Typists, and order stationery and office supplies.

Typists are granted one additional increment for,

(i) a pass at Grade E or above in English

Language (Syllabus B) in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education or equivalent; and,

(ii)

each 10 w.p.m. typing speed in excess of 40 w.p.m.

(2) Proposed Grade and Rank Structure

It is proposed :

in respect of ranks,

(i) there should be one rank only that of

"Typist";

(ii) the supervision of mixed stenographic/

typing pools should not be undertaken by Senior Typists who are not qualified in shorthand but a new rank of Supervisor of Typing Services (see below);

(iii) no further appointments should be made to

the rank of Senior Typist and serving Senior Typists (41 in number) should retain their present salaries on a personal basis and undertake normal typing duties;

in respect of qualifications and experience for appointment,

(i) the minimum requirement should remain

as numeracy and literacy at the level of Form IV or Middle IV tested by entrance examination, combined with tested typing speed and accuracy in typing and an inter- view;
