When we spoke on Tuesday your main concern seemed to be that the promotion prospects of Typists, i.e. to Senior Typist, were being abolished. It was explained that these promotion prospects are actually more apparent than real, and that in the normal course of events only five vacancies will occur during the next ten years in the rank of Senior Typist (in relation to a total of 1,389 Typists). Whilst the revised structure would remove the existing rank of Senior Typist (i.e. the opportunity to gain 3 more increments for a very small number of Typists), it will provide all Typists with the guarantee of an additional increment. As more than 600 serving Typists are already on the maximum point of the present salary scale this will bring an immediate benefit to them. Serving Senior Typists would, of course, retain their present salary scale as a personal right. They will, in addition, have promotion prospects to Supervisor, Typing Services, which carries a much higher salary scale, but promotion would naturally depend on their obtaining the prescribed qualifications and being suitable for promotion.
