So far as I am aware, the latest only thorough appraisal of the

structure and concentration of Hong Kong's industries is contained in the 1971 Census of Manufacturing Establishments (CME). Naturally, this census did not cover non-manufacturing firms such as banks, insurance companies, deposit-taking companies, shipping firms, wholesalers and general traders.

However, there is one table from the 1973 Census of Industrial Produc- tion (CIP) which is relevant, since it shows the contribution made to industrial production by some firms not classified as 'Manufacturing Establish- ments':

The column which best shows the importance to Hong Kong of each industrial sector is the Value Added column. The important feature to note is that the four utility industries account for about 5% of Hong Kong's 'industrial output' (= Value Added), employing only 0.8% of Hong Kong's industrial workforce (of 729,00 in 1970).
