I talked to both Basil Eastwood POD and Michael Collins M&CD

about the future of Mr McEntee.

Mr McEntee returned to Belize in September and his present tour will therefore end in September of next year. Mr Collins tells me that there will be elections in Belize at some time between] October and December 1979. From a political point of view either an interegnum or a new Governor would be undesirable before elections are over. There is a possibility that Mr McEntee might be promoted to Grade 3. We were aware of this proposal which was originally put up by Mr Posnett on 23.2.78 and endorsed by Mr Cortazzi in his minute to Mr Forster of 1.3.78. The proposal is on the agenda of the Number 1 Board but it is not yet certain when this will meet next. Mr Collins told me that he sounded out Mr McEntee when he was home recently about staying on for a further term. He said that he would be willing to do this providing he was promoted since he did not regard Belize as a particularly desirable proposition without further inducement. Mr Collins thinks that it would be a good thing for Mr McEntee to stay on since he has got on to a very good basis with both Premier Price and the opposition in Belize.

I stressed to both POD and M&CD our interest and involvement in this matter and told them that we plan to call a meeting of the DTSAB probably early in 1980. Both Mr Eastood and Mr Collins promised to keep me informed of any developments.
