1. Thank you very much for your letter of 23 November about UK help in maintaining Government Houses. say so, my wife was especially relieved that some of the headache of keeping things up to scratch may now be eased. From my own standpoint I also hope that UK funds may be available for certain essential purposes in the Office which is sadly shabby and has a number of equipment deficiencies: we do not, for example, have a photocopier. Fortunately I have a stalwart PA. My mind boggles however at the impression which casual visitors may gain of our operation. I don't think that those considering involving it themselves in the BVI and, especially, those who might

wish to invest here, would be encouraged to do so by the ted appearance of the Office.

As you may know, we are expecting John Edwards, the new Head of the Development Division in the West Indies, here next week and I have already been in touch with him to ask if it might be possible for someone from the Property Services side to give an opinion on reasonable standards both in the House and in the Office. In the meantime however, my wife and I are preparing our own list of needs for the House which I hasten to say is nothing grand, and I have asked my PA to look very carefully indeed. around the Office and to let me have a list of suggestions covering both repair and renovation.

3. In advance of the arrival of the Dev Div team, may I particularly pick up para 5 of your letter, and your suggestion on presentation of the new arrangements. I feel sure that it would be better locally if Dev Div presented the new arrangement as part of a wider scheme covering dependent territories generally. Then it would look a little less as though I had just arrived and formed an adverse view of the House and the Office.
