Flag A 1. Mr James Johnson MP (Labour Kingston-upon-Hull, West) wrote

38 to Lord Goronwy-Roberts on 20 April and Mr Stan Newens MP (Labour Co-operative - Harlow) to the Home Secretary on 7 April enclosing Flag B letters from Mrs Elsie Elliott. Both letters from Mrs Elliott,

35) which were couched in the same terms, concerned

who claims that he was unjustly demoted from the rank of Inspector in the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. Lord Goronwy-Roberts sent interim replies on 27 April while the department sought information from the Hong Kong Government.

Flag 2. The Hong Kong Government have advised that the issues which Mrs Elliott raised in her letters to the two MPs are the subject of a petition to the Governor. The Governor is seeking more information from the signatories of the petition and it may be some time before a full reply to the MPs' letters can be given. In these circumstances, I recommend that further interim replies should be sent to the two MPs. I submit drafts.
