During January 1977, 104 illegal immigrants (83 from

China and 21 from Macao) were arrested by the Police, compared with 86 last month (85 from China and 1 from Macao).

The new agreed terminology for pinpointing method and place of entry from China was brought into effect on 1st January, 1977.

Of the 83 illegal immigrants from China arrested, 32 were land crossers, 6 bay crossers and 45 sea crossers. Most were between 16 25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 29 on 5th January.

This group of 29 was arrested by the Police at Perimeter 27 (High Island) on 5th January their junk had sunk. Enquiries revealed that they were farmers of the Ao Tou Commune who arranged their escape by stealing one of the commune's fishing junks. All were repatriated to China on 6th January.

On 14th January, a 22-year-old youth of Tung Wu Commune, after climbing over the border fence at Perimeter 1 (Sha Tau Kok), proceeded to town with the assistance of a local farmer. Both were intercepted by the Police at Sha Tau Kok village.

The farmer was prosecuted for aiding and abetting and the youth repatriated on 25th January.
