as there are no suitable sites for the reprovisioning of the beds.

For the Pokfulam Road/Hill Road link, three possible routes have been explored, viz:

(i)

a 22-foot tunnel link (gradient 1 in.9. 2) between Pokfulam Road and Hill Road- under Elliot Filter Beds. The close proximity to the waterworks installations, however, precludes this alignment.

(ii) An 'on-surface' 24-foot connection (gradient 1 in 10) between Pokfulam Road and Hill Road around Belcher's Garden, The estimated cost of the work is $11 million. (iii) A straight 22-foot tunnel (gradient 1 in 47)

between Pokfulam Road and Kotewall Road/ Hill Road link. The estimated cost is $11 million.

While it is, therefore, possible that a detailed engineering investigation would confirm the feasibility of such connections from Kotewall Road to Hill Road and from Pokfulam Road to Hill Road, the proposals are not recommended in view of the high cost involved and of the sub- standard nature of the routes. (in particular the extremely dangerous bends) dictated by the topography of the area,

(e) The introduction of new forms of transport, such

as a modern monorail system of the type proposed by a private developer for use in Kowloon and moving walkways

(i) Modern monorail system

The possibility of a monorail system in' Kowloon between Tsim Sha Tsui and Kwun**** Tong via the Airport is being studied by a private developer. If this proves to be acceptable, the introduction of a similar system into the Mid-Levels and Pok Fu Lam areas could be considered. However, a feasibility study by experts in this field will be needed, before firm decisions can be taken on the introduction of this type of system.

(ii) Moving walkways

Moving walkways for uphill travel into the Mid-Levels area would have limited application. The only practicable alignment would be along Peel Street; as this would not originate from a
