In the following paragraphs is summarised the
progress achieved so far under each of these objectives.
Matters over which neither Government has any control (e.g.
prices, quality, delivery)

The Trade Development Council has started a detailed analysis of Britain's performance in the Hong Kong market. It has selected certain products for which Britain's global performance is generally good; it is examining Britain's exports to Hong Kong and Hong Kong's imports from all sources generally and Britain in particular, in these products.

This exercise should enable the Working Group to examine why, in respect of such aspects as price, quality and delivery
(a) some British firms do better than others in Hong
Kong;
and (b)

some supplying developed countries (e.g. other EEC countries) appear to have done better in Hong
Kong market in some instances than Britain.
The Senior British Trade Commissioner will
contribute to this analysis from his experience of British
firms.

The Working Group are persuaded that detailed analysis on these lines is essential if the Group are to come to valid conclusions. But the analyses will take some months to complete (although the Trade Development Council hopes to finish its work on one product in December).
