Progress Report for November 1976 on the Joint Working Group on Trade with Britain

Introduction

The Working Group were formed at the end of

October 1976 with a remit

(a) to find out which British exporters had succeeded

in the Hong Kong market, how and why, and to use this information as the basis for identifying, encouraging and advising cther potential exporters; to advise HE, CS and others who carry weight with the media, which groups in Hong Kong are worth talking to about encouraging trade with Eritain.

Membership includes the Secretary for Economic Services, the Director of Commerce and Industry, the Senior British Trade Commissioner, the Executive Director Trade

Development Council, and the Director Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (who is also the representative of the Confederation of British Industries in Hong Kong).

The Working Group aims

to comment on matters over which neither Government has any control (e.g. prices, quality and delivery); to see whether institutional arrangements over which the respective Governments could exercise some influence are satisfactory (e.g. agency arrangements);

to determine the extent to which fiscal

developments in Britain are affecting British

exports to Hong Kong;

to determine ways in which the Hong Kong Government and institutions can help the British Trade Commission.
