UNHCR Appeal for Displaced Persons in Thailand from Cambodia,
Vietnam and Laos

This appeal of 29 August 1975 was for $12.4m, based on the requirements of an estimated 45,000 refugees (predominantly from Laos) in Thailand. The appeal is to cover costs of food (about total cost)
and more durable forms of assistance such as housing and public services.
UNHCR indicate that the Thai Government will match their contribution

in kind. Areport by HM Embassy in Bangkok indicates that with minor exceptions there is no particular hardship in the refugee camps, at present. There is thus no acute humanitarian problem at present, though a contribution to this appeal would asssist the Thai Government in
dealing with the problem.
UN Appeal for Food Supplies for Laos

This appeal made on 17 July 1975 is for $10m for emergency food
assistance. The assessment from HM Ambassador Vientiane and SEADD
Bangkok is that this is a diminishing problem and that the full amount
sought will not be required. The situation will be relieved when the
new rice crop is available in November. Meanwhile there are severe
shortages of food in parts of Lacs and the gap will not be filled by
supplies already promised by China and other donors. The immediate
requirement is about 10,000 tons of rice plus other food items, and HM Ambassador has recommended a donation of about $250,000. He has advised that supplies could be delivered one month from the offer of
assistance being made. Sir Robert Jackson UNHCR has expressed the hope that we will contribute and suggested that this would stimulate further
donations.

5. The ICRC appealed for Swiss franks 87.5m in April for emergency
assistance to displaced persons in South Vietnam and Cambodia.

12 September ICRC reported that they still need SF 18m (about £3.2m)
to cover the remainder of relief items pledged under their current
operation. These are mainly raw cotton, paper for school books,
thread and nylon for manufacture of raincoats; ie items for
rehabilitation rather than immediate relief.
