On 26th May, 1973, officers of the Narcotics Bureau seized a number of processed meat tins which had been adapted apparently to conceal heroin destined for export.
Two types of tins were seized, which originally were packed with fish and pork in the People's Republic of China. The labels had been steamed off and a small window cut in the side of each tin. The original contents had been removed and the tins had been thoroughly cleansed and we suspect were about to be refilled with heroin. Each tin could hold about 8 ounces of No. 3 heroin and a total of fifteen adapted tins were seized.
No exact information has been forthcoming about the even- tual destination of the tins but it is believed that they were destined for the European market.
Cases of this nature have not previously come to light and extensive enquiries have confirmed that this was a very small scale one man operation.
Details of this case plus colour photographs of the adapted tins have already been circulated to the relevant agencies.
