CHENG Wing-fei, Condemned Prisoner No. 14594

a prisoner in Hong Kong Prison humbly showeth 監獄囚犯 謹陳

(1)

That on the 10th April, 1974, the appeal of your humble

petitioner was dismissed and he is now a condemned prisoner waiting to be

executed for the offence of murder.

(2)

That your humble petitioner is seeking for mercy from Your

Excellency the Governor to save him from this punishment.

(3)

That your humble petitioner is a single man, aged 20 years,

having been born in this Colony, and that his education ceased at Primary

6 level when he was aged 13 years, due to the impoverished circumstances of

his family.

(4)

That in spite of his lack of education and financial difficulties,

your humble petitioner.strove to earn an honest living, and by the date of

his arrest on this matter had worked first as a dim-sum boy in a restaurant,

as an apprentice in a plastics factory, as a packer in a textile factory, as

an apprentice goldsmith, as a delivery boy and finally as a plastics factory

worker, on each occasion changing his employment in order to improve his

standard of living and to assist his family.

That in the year 1972, your humble petitioner became acquainted

with members of the Sing Wor Triad Society, and in order to protect himself

from possible harassment, in the month of January, 1973 joined the society,

but did not become, or seek to become, a full member.

That your humble petitioner became involved in this fatal incident

by reason of his connection with the society and by reason of his acquaintance

with one HO So-kuen, who requested your humble petitioner to accompany him
