In 1967 a scheme was inaugurated to house up to 60,000 Londoners over a period of 15 years on a riverside area in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley. project area, known as THAMESMEAD, comprises some 1,300 acres (526 hectares) and is being developed by the Greater London Council in co-operation with the Borough Councils of Greenwich and Bexley to provide a balance of residential, industrial, educational and recreational development for the community. Special consideration is being given to the provision of adequate health and other community services.

The BOROUGH OF HAMMERSMITH was formed on 1 April, 1965, when all the previous local authorities of London, except the City of London, were re-organised and new Boroughs were designed. The Boroughs of Fulham and Hammersmith were merged to form the present London Borough which has a population of approximately 200,000 and an area of 3,988 acres (1,614 hectares); there are 70 Members of Council. The British Broadcasting Corporation's Television Centre and Olympia are just 2 of many major establishments in the Borough. Hammersmith is the only Borough in Britain to have 3 League Football clubs in its area Chalsea, Queens Park Rangers and Fulham.
