PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY TILBURY DOCKS

A visit to the Port of London Authority is being arranged to be followed by a tour of Tilbury Docks.

The PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY is a statutory undertaking whose membership consists of representatives of Government departments, local authorities and port users. The Authority is responsible for the general and navigational control of over 90 miles (144 kilometres) of some of the busiest waterways in the world and the maintenance of a large estate of which the Authority's docks and warehouses alone extend to over 4,000 acres (1,619 hectares) with 22 miles (34 kilometres) of deep-water quays. There are 4 large forest products (packaged timber) berths and 6 deep-water container berths at Tilbury, which serves over 30 major world ports with container services.

TILBURY DOCKS are situated near the mouth of the Thames, about 26 miles (41 kilo- metres) below London Bridge. One of the 3 major groups of docks operated by the Port of London Authority (PLA), they cover a total area of over 1,064 acres (431 hectares), including about 155 acres (63 hectares) of water. There is a passenger terminal on the riverside. A £30 million development scheme provides some 2 miles (3 kilometres) of new quays and makes Tilbury a major ocean container terminal as well as providing 4 deep-water berths for forest products (packaged timber) and others for roll on/roll off services. Under a £6 million scheme, the PLA has built a new bulk grain terminal, including a jetty and 3 silos. A rail container terminal was opened in 1969 within the dock estate.
