The GREATER LONDON COUNCIL is the local authority with regional responsibility for Greater London. It works in close co-operation with the 32 London Borough Councils and the City of London which have their local responsibilities. The area is some 610 sq miles (1,600 sq kilometres) with a population of about seven and a half million. Functions for which the GLC is wholly or partly responsible include town planning, housing, public transport (the red buses and underground trains) roads and traffic, sewage and refuse disposal, fire brigade and ambulance services, flood. prevention, preservation of buildings, parks and entertainments, licensing and research. The members of the Council are elected every 4 years and they choose by the majority party.

Leave County Hall for a walk along South Bank.

The SOUTH BANK ARTS CENTRE (also known as THE SOUTH BANK), which is situated between Waterloo Bridge and Hungerford Bridge on the south bank of the Thames in London, consists of the Royal Festival Hall, the smaller Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, the Hayward Art Gallery, and, under Waterloo Bridge, the National Film Theatre. The concert halls and art gallery are connected by a series of pedestrian terraces and the whole site is flanked by a riverside walk. The arts centre was built by the Greater London Council (formerly the London County Council), and in 1969 work started on the National Theatre on a site to the northeast of $ Waterloo Bridge. This will be the final stage in this complex of buildings for the arts on the South Bank.
