HONG KONG

Thank you for your letter of 25 February giving further

details about the rehousing of squatters.

From the figures you provide, it appears that there is

vide

an estimated total of some 700,000 squatters in the

Colony of which it is recommended that 150,000 should

be rehoused during the next six years. This leaves

a not inconsiderable balance of over half a million

squatters but, as you point out, not all squatters are

badly housed/or anxious to move.

The tremendous size of the rehousing problem is

appreciated and the energetic manner in which you and

your staff are tackling it have our admiration and

support. I hope you will do everything you can to see

that the recommendations put forward by the Housi ng

Board are accepted.
