EEC AND COTTON TEXTILES

1.

The comments I made in my minute of 18 October, and especially those in paragraphs 6 to 8, apply to the draft AE paper. The draft does not properly reflect the position on the GPS but I understand that TPD will be providing you with suitable amendments.

2. I have no objections to the amendments suggested by Mr Buist in his letter of 15 October to Mr Thornton.

3. I mentioned to you on the telephone this morning that the longer term position on textiles may be affected by the current pressure on the DTI by the British textile industry. It is not impossible that this pressure may lead to requests that the British Government should soon move towards a more restrictive attitude on textile imports.
