FIRST MAJOR CONTRACT FOR KAI TAK EXTENSION
Expected To Be Lot By End Of July
The first major contract for extension of the runway promontory
at Kai Tak by about 2,530 feet should be let by the end of July, with
work beginning soon afterwards to enable completion of the whole project
in 1973.
The $115 million extension --one of the biggest projects in
the Public Works programe --is designed by Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick
and Partners, consulting civil engineers, who will also supervise its
construction.
The new runway will have an overall length of 11,130 feet.
At its narrowest section, the overall width of the reclamation at the
top of the seawalls will be 830 feet, comprising the runway proper -
a centre strip 200 feet wide and grass strips, 250 feet and 260
feet wide, to the west and east of the runway proper, and a 75-foot-
wide taxiway with an adjacent 45-foot-wide surfaced strip to the crest
of the east seawall.
Towards the seaward end of the new runway, there will be
a by-pass area, and next to it a subsidiary fire station.
