ADVICE ON NEW COMPENSATION LAW
Labour Department On Imminent Implementation Of Workmen's Bill
The new law on workmen's compensation coming into effect on
Thursday deserves to be looked at "very closely" by all who are affected
by its provisions.
Giving this advice today, a Labour Department spokesman says not
only have more people, including domestic servants, been brought within
its scope, but also the financial obligations of employers over injured
workers have been "substantially increased."
As the law now stands, no employer is compelled to insure against
his liabilities, but the spokesman considers it "unwise" not to do so.
In certain circumstances, a worker earning $500 a month could
claim as much as $56,000 in the event of very serious injury.
Higher rates of compensation will be payable for all accidents
occurring after January 1.
Payment to the dependants of a worker who dies from an injury,
providing they were wholly dependent on his earnings, may amount to
36 months' earnings up to a maximum of $45,000.
