ADMINISTRATION IN CONFIDENCE
V. The Office Premises.
We have been in Shell House since about 1964, having been brought here by my predecessor from much less desirable offices in Alexandra House. During my time the offices have been expanded twice. The first time was in 1967, when we absorbed additional accommodation on the 7th floor to allow for increased administrative and commercial staff. The second time was in 1968 when we extended to the 6th floor, obtained the PBX etc. in order to accommodate the Information Staff and to allow a little extra spare for future commercial staff should we have to employ them. It would be
wise to keep a close watch on Bache & Co. to see whether they ever show signs of leaving the 7th floor. There is no doubt it would be more convenient for us to be all on one floor.
Our landlord has his offices across the road. is Mr. Oi Sai Fun a prominent local financier, and a neighbour of yours in Deep Water Bay Road,

There have, at one time or another, been suggestions that we are not in the right place. Personally I think the office is well situated, and the building is well administered by the landlord. It is important to be close to the business centre, but it is not necessary - in my view to have an airline type of office at street level as has sometimes been suggested by members of B.N.E.C.

VI.
We administer the post hirings and rent hirings of several other Diplomatic Service offices in Hong Kong. For your own satisfaction you might like to review the authorities for the various rents and furniture hirings. I think we are up to date with rent certificates and so on, but in my view the system should be tighter, although I have no suspicion that there is any malpractice.
