George Thomas has passed on to me

I am replying your letter of the

9th September to George Thomas with which you

enclosed a letter from one of your constituents,

Mrs. Olive Lewis, on the subject of Hong Kong.

The Ta Kung Pas was not one of the three

newspapers recently suspended by the Hong Kong

Courts. The papers in question were the

Tin Fung Yat Po, the Hong Kong Evening News

and the Afternoon News; and the ban on these

three papers is being strictly enforced.

So far as the Ta Kung Pao is concerned, the

Hong Kong authorities are, of course, fully

aware, of the nature and tone of the material

has been publishing that it publiches. But the question of taking

action against this particular newspaper (and a

number of others) is not a straightforward one

and the advantages and disadvantages of such

action need to be carefully weighed. I am in

close

constant touch with the Hong Kong authorities

Quer this subject and Mrs. Lewis may rest

continering assured that the situation is

is under constant

benj very confily review.

carefully

I return Mrs. Lewis' letter and its

enclosure.
