Addressed to Foreign Office telegram No. 50 of 15 January. Repeated for information to Hong Kong (Priority) and Routine to Washington and POLAD Singapore.

People's Daily of 13 January carries an article on the mass movement by Hong Kong workers to study and apply Mao Tse-tung's thought.

Article describes this as "an important gain arising from the struggle against British violence in the last 8 months". Article concludes by claiming that "many workers have realised that they can only win victory in the struggle against British imperialist violence by following Chairman Mao's injunction to "organise millions upon millions of the masses and move a mighty revolutionary army into action".

2. The Peking Daily of 14 January publishes an expanded version of the article which ends with the claim that Hong Kong workers are "pledging themselves to advance the revolutionisation of their thinking to win ultimate victory against British imperialist violence, contribute more to the dissemination of Mao's thought and support the revolutionary struggles of the people all over the world". (NCNA 011223).

3.

Both papers carry identical reports of an exhibition on the living study and application of Mao's thought said to have been opened "recently" in Hong Kong by workers from all trades.

See my immediately following telegram.
