erected in Kowloon and take the form of another Central Church. Negotiations for a site were begun in 1940 and were renewed after the liberation of the Colony. The offer of the present site in Gascoigne Road, was made in 1948 and finally accepted in 1949.

In formulating the policy for this new scheme it was felt that while the Church should still be the central feature, the time had come to add other types of service.

From the time when Wesley founded his first boys' school in Bath, education has always been one of the main interests of the Methodist Church. This education- al tradition continues to be strong

in Great Britain and there are a number of people in Hong Kong whose secondary education was received in Methodist schools. This interest in education has gone with the Methodist Church throughout the world, the world, and Methodist Educa- tional institutions have made notable contributions in most parts of the British Commonwealth, in the Unit ed States of America and in China.

The Chinese Methodist Church in Hong Kong felt that the time was now ripe for it to undertake educational work so it was decided that the new scheme should include provision for a school of 500 children. The grade was to be Vernacular Elementary.

The position of the church close to a dense population pointed also to the need for doing something to help the less fortunate members of the community. In the light of past experience in China it is planned to use the whole of the premises in the evenings for this purpose and to make a start with a practical type of education for adolescents who have had no earlier opportunity of training.

The new buildings consist of three main blocks joined together into one unit. The central block con. tains the church with seating cap- acity for 1000 people and an all- purpose school hall which seats 500. This hall with its tiled flooring can
