The English Methodist Church, while continuously serving the religious needs of the Colony has also done notable work in caring for the men in the Forces. The first Sailors' and Soldiers' Home was opened in Arsenal Street in 1901. The present Home was built in 1927, extended in 1934 and rehabili- tated in 1946.

The first organised Chinese Methodist Church was begun in 1884 by a retired Chinese Methodist Minister from Australia, the Rev. Leung On Tong. In 1910 this church worshipped in a small shop in Aberdeen Street. In 1920 a house was bought in Caine Road and adapted for worship. Numbers continued to grow so a great new

step forward was made when the first real church building was erected in Hennessy Road, Wanchai, This seated 750 people and con- tained a Lower Hall and a number of other rooms.

The continued growth in num- bers of the congregation made further buildings desirable and it was decided that these should be
