of aircraft noise the television studios have been located right in the centre of the building, with the office areas on four sides and above. Freedom from vibration has been ensured by isolating the studios from the ground by the use of double concrete floors with 4 in. of rockwool floor batts in between. All floors are laid to an overall smoothness and within a fall of 1 in 3,000.
Walls are of reinforced concrete with a fibreglass quilt in the 4 in. air space and a 9 in. brick wall on the in- side. The brick wall has been surfaced with exposed rockwool held in posi- tion by timber battens and the ceiling is suspended Cellotex.
The building structure is reinforced concrete throughout. It is supported on a driven pile foundation. The peri- meter, which is used for the offices, is treated as a column with a plate slab, eliminating the need for beams, and the core is surrounded by a shear wall. Floors over the central area are sup- ported by concrete wall beams.
Doors into the studios and quiet areas are solid timber with an outer set of doors separated by a 6 in. air space. Both sets are fitted with closers and close on to neoprene tubes.
The siting of offices and corridors around the perimeter of the studios, apart from providing a sound barrier, also allows easy circulation and access. It allows, in addition, direct access by the public to the audience studio and first floor viewing gallery while debar-
